@dattu Welcome to you and greetings from #Friendica in the Fediverse. If you're interested you may find very basic information about decentralised socil network HERE

No, as far as I know there are no bridges to FB or TW in #Friendica nor in d*.

Woohoo! team #Friendica is amazing!!!

Unrelated but I found it odd that the language addon filtered this as French... does it consider the girl in the red dress to be French? j/k :P

Decentralised & Free Social Networks

For those who are #newhere from other social networks, here’s a bit of handy vocabulary to #help you navigate this new social network universe:

- Protocol - An agreed format that enables software applications to communicate with (or “federate” with) each other. The two most heavily used protocols around here are Diaspora and ActivityPub. As an end user, you don’t have to care about the protocol you are using and you don’t ever see the “protocol” other than it enables or limits which users you can see.
Nevertheless, be aware that currently not all the platforms (see this word later) are fully compatible and limit you in the possibility of interactions.

Wow! Friendica's Twitter bridge is bi-directional? I was on Twitter proper and reshared a post. I came over to Diaspora to check a Friendica-to-Diaspora connection and saw it. Hat's off #friendica developers!

Let's try to setup a new server on scaleway but this arm based. I remember I had previously problem with nginx but maybe this time I'll find the solution.
My x86 one is out of memory with only 2GB after adding my #friendica instance.

Does anyone plan to join the #Wikipedia blackout with their #Friendica node on 21.03.2019?

@Tobias does that blackout addon still work, did you test it lately?

Just a little 'Thank You'...

@Hypolite Petovan , you make me proud and quite happy that I chose Friendica for my #distributed / #federated social platform! My sincerest gratitude to you for what you've given to the community, and your (seemingly) endless patience to help others. What a great dev and a fine human being! You make #Friendica one of the best open-source software experiences out there.

I hope to eventually be able to contribute something real to the project as well, but for now I just wanted to say 'thank you'!

Btw, I'm sure there are a lot of other people that deserve a huge thanks for Friendica, and I'm grateful to them as well - but @Hypolite Petovan is the person I have direct experience with, and has helped me out several times since I started running my Friendica instance. I certainly don't mean to minimize anyone else, though, and I realize OSS is a team effort! So thanks to everyone involved!

Working on #Friendica really expanded my international horizons, I now know how to say "Guys with big schlongs" in Italian, and you can learn it too!

My #friendica instance is still crashing in reason of my 2GB of RAM.

But it looks like it is a common issue on #mariadb container. I am trying to fix memory constraints to avoid this with :

`docker update -m 500M --memory-swap 500M friendicadb`

Hope it will work !

The other option is to pop an ARM server with more resources but unfortunately friendica server image is not yet compatible.

Way to go, #Fediverse. Let's get it on!

#RPG Folks: There's a Friendica server at https://rpgtable.top, part of the Fediverse, designed originally as a refuge for the G+ rolegaming community and expanding/revising its role in the larger community as people join and participate. I'm one of the admins. Check out our instance! #ttrpg #friendica #tabletop_rpg #gaming #games

Oh dear #Fediverse , today I saw people complaining that a service is using #Mastodon instead of #Friendica or #Pleroma or $whatever , because that's way better.

And this is why #Linux or #XMPP or $FLOSS never succeeded, because we don't even like our own kind.

I was pleasantly surprised at the anti-climatic and uneventful outcome of your friend's platform transition! That is indeed great!

As someone who has only been maintaining a #Friendica instance for a few days now I am curious; did your friend cite any reasons for their move to #Mastadon? Was his instance for personal use, or open publicly? I imagine it would take some pretty major problems (with the former) or benefits (to the latter) to justify transitioning a public node! ...But like I said, I'm new to this and just trying to get a broader understanding of what people are doing with these amazing open-source platforms, and what sorts of general consensus exists around them. Thanks for sharing this!

#Fediverse tale: a #Friendica contact of mine announced he moved to #Mastodon, a different social media platform. I can still follow him, so the move has been seamless for me.

That’s it. That’s great. Join the Fediverse.

Which websites featured on the Federation have the worst privacy?

My last post highlighted how ticking the OEmbed box to add a website picture to a post can compromise Federation users if it contains a tracker.

[:]

[:]

I also mentioned tools, like Disconnect, we could use to detect websites which track their users. In this post I reveal some of the most popular reference websites on the Federation with low privacy and high tracking rates.

I believe Federation users should consider not embedding, or at least warning their readers about the surveillance techniques carried out by these sites.

A Princeton University study identified almost a million websites that track their users. Here are just 5 examples of websites whose stories are commonly quoted on the Federation:

Some statistics about contacts on libranet.de

Hello,
I was wondering how many feeds are imported on the node. So I did some queries on the contact table.

Number of total contacts per network type:

Network protocols:
Diaspora (dspr) 56880
ActivityPub (apub) 29448
OStatus (stat) 23568
Friendica (dfrn) 8181
RSS/Atom (feed) 1606
E-Mail (mail) 35

Network connectors:
Twitter (twit) 232867
Pump.io (pump) 158
StatusNet (stac) 1

I'm really surprised about the huge number of Twitter contacts. And I'm also surprised about the pretty low number of feed contacts. I expected a lot more than that. And I didn't expect that someone is really using the email protocol support. Interesting.

Reporting, Blocking instances/pods, etc.

So, what's the overall status of tools to deal with bad people here in #Friendica?

You can block individual profiles, which is good, but can we, the users, have an option to block entire instances like you can in #Mastodon? For example, I'd _really_ like to block the share.naturalnews.com pod, since it's apparently a hub for conspiracy theorists and bigots. Also, is there anything that's close to a report feature? How do I report posts and profiles? There are literal nazis jerking it to swatikas and I see nowhere to report it so that it gets removed and no one else has to deal with it.

I understand that Friendica is free-software and entirely run by volunteers, so it's fine if these features are not here _yet_, but on the other hand, the lack of these features might be intentional, which, if true, really sucks.

Welcome! Here’s some info to help you get started.

Welcome to the Federation!

The Federation is a global, distributed social network. That means that unlike social networking sites like Facebook or Twitter, which have one central location that has full control over the network and user data, the Federation has no central control over the network or user data. Instead, individual computers or "pods" operated by different individuals or groups all communicate with each other to create a network where users around the world can share ideas with one another.

The Federation includes five different projects (you joined one of these):... Show more...

♲ Fedilab (tom79@mastodon.social):
#GNUSocial users will be able to use groups.
Group names will be clickable in posts for opening the corresponding timeline.
I added an entry in menu for an easy access to your groups.
I wil try to implement that on #Friendica when I will manage to make it work with the web app 😀

I created the bot that allows to suggest instances. You can test it by mentioning it at @fedvice

- You need to add a URL to the instance and keywords.

- It replies with the same privacy of your original message.

- You can remove your data simply by mentioning it with the word "delete" or "remove".

- It will guess the social network behind the host name.

- The next step will be to suggest instances thanks to keywords when it will have more data.

What is a #Cuckpod?

The precise criteria are somewhat murky, but it seems to involve hurting a Nazi's feelings. Various lame attempts have been made at creating a static list, but thanks to @https://podupti.me we have proper software to do this.

If you're a #cuckpodmin, or just wish you were, add your pod to the list so all of the edgelord shitheels in the Federation know to steer clear of your NPC ass. If you sign up in the next 30 days, George Soros will cover all of your hosting expenses for a year*!
